This month we focused largely on industry trends and social media influencers in our blog posts, with emphasis placed on prominent cybersecurity threats, excessive cybersecurity spending, and the cybersecurity insurance market.

[March 4th, 2021] The Fallacy of Excess Cybersecurity Spending — Every week, new reports come out about ballooning cybersecurity budgets. Organizations have fallen into the trap of benchmarking their cybersecurity performance by the number of tools they have deployed, the size of their budget, or even against their industry peers, disregarding analysis of how these budgets are actually impacting their baseline cybersecurity performance. [March 15th, 2021] The High Cost of Coverage and the Risky Business of Cybersecurity Insurance — Cybersecurity insurance has been a big market in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. According to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach report, the average cost of a data breach is $3.86 million and results in $1.52 million in lost business. As a result, insurance companies have created a cybersecurity insurance market; providing insurance policies that allows some level of protection against the financial risk of a data breach. However, because perceived risk is so high cybersecurity policies frequently come attached with exorbitant premiums. Ransomware attacks have skyrocketed, digital hygiene backslid, and never-before-seen attacks such as the SolarWinds hack figured prominently.
